Career Exposure for STEM Pathways is an intensive, application-based six-week learning experience that builds the capacity of primary and secondary STEAM educators and coaches to connect classroom learning with STEM careers and the challenges those careers help address. Selected participants will deepen their understanding of how to make these connections meaningful for students by learning alongside STEAM educators from across the network, drawing on the Career Readiness Education Framework and LabXchange's STEM Explorer, and using the Meaningful STEM Career Exploration Educator Guide to develop and implement a career exploration activity with students.
They will then bring what they learned back to the group, reflect with peers on what worked and what they would approach differently, and draw on others' experiences to strengthen their ability to design and facilitate meaningful STEM career exploration.
Objectives
- Learn what makes STEM career exploration meaningful for students. Explore how classroom learning connects to STEM careers and real-world challenges, and identify career pathways linked to issues students care about.
- Design and implement a career exploration activity with students. Gain practical insights and skills to turn challenges students care about into an activity that brings them into contact with real STEM work.
- Strengthen your practice by reflecting with STEAM educators across the network. Reflect on what worked and what to approach differently, and draw on educators' experience in other contexts to evolve how you design and facilitate career exploration.
Format
3 × 90-minute sessions over 6 weeks, with pre- and post-work and activities to complete with your students between sessions. Please review the timeline below and ensure you can commit to the full learning experience before applying.
- Before Nov 11 | ~1 hr pre-work Join the cohort WhatsApp group, review the STEM Career Exploration Educator Guide, and explore STEM careers on LabXchange.
- Nov 11 | Session 1 (90 min) Explore the importance of STEM career exposure and prepare a career exploration conversation with your students.
- Nov 12–17 | With students Facilitate the conversation and identify a challenge students want to address.
- Nov 18 | Session 2 (90 min) Share student-identified challenges, explore relevant STEM careers and professionals, and begin designing an activity.
- Nov 19–Dec 8 | Implementation Finalize and implement your activity with students, connect with a STEM professional, and reflect on your learning.
- Dec 9 | Session 3 (90 min) Share your activity and learnings with the cohort and plan how to share them with other educators.
- Dec 10–17 | Follow-up Finalize and upload your resources to LabXchange and share your experience with educators in your network.
